Herschend Family Entertainment began when Hugo and Mary Herschend obtained a ninety-nine year lease on a roadside attraction in Branson, Missouri in 1951. this attraction was Marvel Cave. Hugo passed away four years later. But his family continued to update the cave and add easier access into the cave. In 1958, cable Cars were added to the end to move guests back up after the long hike down into the Earth. Silver Dollar City comes from a promotion the attraction did where they gave change in Silver Dollars. Thus when guests would spend these coins, they would tell cashiers where they got it from and then advertised Marvel Cave. The park gamed fame when the cast and crew of then popular Beverly HillBillies visited to film five episodes. The company acquired Dollywood, then known as Silver Dollar City Pigeon Forge in 1976. Country Star Dolly Parton got a stake in the park in 1986, transforming it to Dollywood. Finally Wild Adventures was acquired in 2007, eleven years after it initially opened. This is where many attractions of the closed Celebration City park would call home after it closed in 2008.
